The Dissertation viva is a necessary part of the assessment for all UK Dissertation modules. The viva is part of the assessment for the module, and the final mark for the module is a result of performance in the written text and the oral viva.

The main functions of the Dissertation viva are to:

1. Enable clarification of any points within the written text of the dissertation.
2. Resolve borderline marks arising from the written text of the dissertation.
3. Establish the student has written the dissertation him/herself.

The Dissertation viva will also involve oral questions on the content of the UK dissertation by the examiners.

These will examine:

1. The topic of the dissertation.
2. The approach taken to the topic.
3. Other research relevant to the dissertation topic or dissertation.
4. The experience of undertaking the research and writing up the Custom dissertation.

The Dissertation viva will last between 10 and 15 minutes, and will take place at an fixed time during week 13 of the Spring Semester. Viva for dissertations completed for the LLB Law and French, LLB Law and German, LLB Law and Russian and LLB Law and Spanish programmes will last longer to enable time to test language skills.

Students should note that two examiners would be present at the viva from the Department.External examiners may also be present. At least two examiners, and perhaps three will therefore conduct the viva. No more than three examiners will be present during the viva.
